Hi! My name is Emily and I'm a writer, a wife to Nick and mother to two very sweet little girls named Daisy and Ella. We live in a quaint little town outside Philadelphia, PA, with our two black lab sisters.

I started this blog as a way to stay connected with friends and family after Daisy was born and it has now become a home for musings on everything from our favorite family recipes, books, travel destinations and, ultimately, my quest to balance work, life, self-care and family - all while staying grateful. Happy reading!

A Different Kind of Gift Guide: Giving Tuesday

November 26, 2018

While other bloggers are posting gift guides for Cyber Week, I thought this year, I would share a guide to Giving Tuesday. Yes – the bonanza of online deals and stills can be thrilling, but I remind you to think about giving as much as you think about getting (or buying).

Giving Tuesday is tomorrow, November 27, 2018 and many organizations are offering fund matching. Facebook has partnered with PayPal to match a total of up to $7 million in donations made on Facebook to eligible US-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and several other major financial institutions are offering similar initiatives so TOMORROW is the time to donate what you can where you can! Here are some causes I believe are especially deserving of our contributions. I’ll start with a few personal:

Montessori Seeds of Education

Daisy’s incredible Montessori school is raising money through the Facebook fundraiser for the conversion of a property they recently purchased into a permanent school campus. We cannot say enough good things about this incredible school community – they have been so supportive of our family this year as we navigated Daisy’s medical issues and have welcomed her (cast and all) with open arms. She has grown into a curious, talkative, brilliant mind under their guidance and we couldn’t be more grateful. Please consider giving even the tiniest bit and help inspire the next generation to create a better world of sustainable peace, equality and resources here and visit www.montessoriseeds.org for more info.

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has become a second home and a second family for us during some of the most difficult times of our lives. The staff have given us the highest quality care, attention, compassion, communication and service. We could never begin to repay our debt to the wonderful people who make CHOP the world-renowned institution that it is. We can, however, spread the word about the incredible things they do for families like us - and we are committed to helping raise money for research and patient care to support the journeys of children like Daisy. Their research (particularly with respect to pediatric cancer) is among the best in the country, saving lives every day.  Please join us and give what you can in Daisy’s name.

Support Families at the Border

Perhaps you missed this news in the bustle of the Thanksgiving holiday but while many of us were enjoying turkey, thousands of mothers and children seeking refuge in the United States were attacked with tear gas by the American government at the US border. These families are in need of safety and our President is responding to their need with torturous measures that are leaving people dead. We must act and do what we can to protect the innocent.

UNICEF USA

In honor of Giving Tuesday, donations to UNICEF USA can be multiplied by THREE to reach the world’s most vulnerable children. I can't think of a more worthy cause than humanitarian efforts to support youth in crisis. In particular, UNICEF is working with the children at the border who have been separated from their parents. Donate here

The Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES)

Donations to RAICES help separated families, detained families, unaccompanied minors, and others who are seeking asylum in the United States. In 2017, RAICES staff closed 51,000 cases at no cost to the client. Their advocacy and commitment to change are driven by the clients and families they serve every day as their attorneys and legal assistants provide legal advocacy and representation in an immigration system that breaks apart families and leaves millions without pathways to legal status. This is one of my favorite nonprofits. Join me in donating here.

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)

Do you consider yourself a freedom fighter? I certainly do and I hope you are with me. The ACLU helps to defend free speech and the right to protest, fights relentless attacks on reproductive freedom and seeks to reform our racially-biased criminal justice system. “The ACLU is actively working in the courts, in Congress and in communities across the country to fight back against the Trump administration's cruel and targeted attacks on people's rights. For nearly 100 years, day in and day out, we've stood up to injustice and intolerance — and we're not backing down now. Donate today to keep the fight going.”

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

If you have healthy children, I encourage you to pause and think about that a profound blessing that is. Consider donating to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to support those families who do not have that luxury. From the website:  Founder and entertainer Danny Thomas opened the doors to St. Jude in 1962 with the dream that “no child should die in the dawn of life." Unlike any other hospital, the majority of their funding comes from individual contributions. And thanks to generous donors, families never receive a bill from St. Jude.” Consider donating and join in the fight to defeat childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases that take young lives every day.

American Cancer Society

There is never a bad time to give to the ACS, but, today is better than ever: Mastercard is matching donations up to $250,000 which helps double our impact against cancer. Contributions help the ACS with things like offering more than 500,000 nights of free lodging at Hope Lodge Communities, saving patients and caregivers more than $37M. Your donations help facilitate travel to and from medical services and chemotherapy – in 2017 more than 300,000 patients received rides for a total of almost 8 million rides. Over 800 grantees received funding thanks to donations from individual contributors like us which helped advance cancer-fighting research. These statistics will continue to rise with our help. Donate here today.

This year, instead of buying more with what you've saved from Cyber Monday,  consider giving the difference to an organization that will work hard with your money. So many are suffering and every little bit helps ❤
