Hi! My name is Emily and I'm a writer, a wife to Nick and mother to two very sweet little girls named Daisy and Ella. We live in a quaint little town outside Philadelphia, PA, with our two black lab sisters.

I started this blog as a way to stay connected with friends and family after Daisy was born and it has now become a home for musings on everything from our favorite family recipes, books, travel destinations and, ultimately, my quest to balance work, life, self-care and family - all while staying grateful. Happy reading!

A Holiday Gift Guide for the Moms in Your Life

December 7, 2017

I can think of a few moms in my life whose partners could use some gentle guidance in the right direction at the holidays (including this mom right here - are you reading Nick? ;) so I put together a list of gifts I am absolutely sure every mom would love to receive this year. Partners of moms, please note: gifts for the household do not count as gifts for mom. To put it plainly: a cutting board doesn't belong under the Christmas tree and the gifting of a new cheese grater shouldn't follow the lighting of the menorah.

Moms need to be taken care of the way we take care of others - sometimes we need encouragement or an expiring gift certificate to make that happen. Moms want photos with their loved ones instead of always taking and framing photos of others. Moms want to feel appreciated and loved for the not-so-fun things we do like scrubbing poop out of leggings. We want experiences and quality time away from the demands of the household.

A Spa Day

I've only had one of these once in my life but it was the best gift I've ever been given (thank you endlessly, mom). Even just one spa service is good, but, if you can swing it, sending the matriarch of your family to the spa for several hours of relaxation will go a long way.  Get a gift certificate and let the mom in your life choose the services she would benefit from most.

A Family Photo Shoot

We moms always feel like the ones corralling everyone together for photo opportunities and it gets old. And half the time, we don't make it into the shot. Whether you stage a casual shoot at home, commit to taking more photos of your kids with their mom or hire a professional, capture the special moments and frame them. We treasure that more than you know.

A Weekend Away

My favorite way to spend time with my family is to get out of the house for a weekend - nothing too far, maybe a three hour drive max - to explore someplace new and enjoy each other's company without the distractions and demands of home. Two nights at an AirBnB in the country or a bed and breakfast in a quaint little town is always a welcome change of pace for us. Can't do laundry or clean your house when you're not in it!

A Letter of Thanks

Maybe it's because I'm a words person but my absolute favorite gifts are always letters. I am confident that every mother I know - whether she has been a mother for two months or five decades - would treasure a letter thanking her for the sacrifices she made for her family, the brilliant meals she cooked with love for every birthday, the Halloween costumes she fabricated out of thin air, the mistakes she helped fix, the broken hearts she helped mend, the bullies she plotted against and the unconditional love she never stopped distributing. Be as specific as you can in these letters – knowing our good deeds haven’t gone unnoticed means everything.

... And of course here are a few material ideas because I can’t resist and because every mom I know wouldn’t mind something to open, too:

Laura Mercier Hand Creme - $18

My coworker wears this hand creme on a daily basis and every time I get a whiff I feel like I've entered a sauna and am about to close my eyes for a sixty-minute Swedish. It smells that good - and it feels even better. Our mom hands get dry from all the scrubbing of dishes, children, clothes and constant handling of baby wipes - this gives them the pampering they need.

J.Crew Ribbed Cashmere Turtleneck - $168

An old love interest gave me my first cashmere sweater and wore it until it was full of holes. There is something so luxe about cashmere – and J.Crew makes a great line of everyday cashmere that holds up over time.

Custom Initial Necklace from Etsy - $27+

There are loads of shops on Etsy (and all over the internet) who make different variations of initial necklaces and bracelets for moms at different price points. I can’t think of a mom who wouldn’t love a delicate, casual chain with initials representing her family.

Eberjey Gisele PJ Set

These are the softest, sweetest, loveliest pajamas out there. The mom in your life deserves these.

Whatever you gift the mom in your life during this holiday season, make sure she knows how much she is loved and appreciated ❤
