Hi! My name is Emily and I'm a writer, a wife to Nick and mother to two very sweet little girls named Daisy and Ella. We live in a quaint little town outside Philadelphia, PA, with our two black lab sisters.

I started this blog as a way to stay connected with friends and family after Daisy was born and it has now become a home for musings on everything from our favorite family recipes, books, travel destinations and, ultimately, my quest to balance work, life, self-care and family - all while staying grateful. Happy reading!

My Favorite Mom Items: Flats

March 16, 2017

I never, ever, ever thought I’d become a person who wore flats. In my twenties, my feet ached if they weren’t in shoes with a 3-inch plus heel. I commuted in heels, I had meetings in heels, I danced home from the bar in heels… They were my uniform. I cringed at the thought of becoming a woman who wore flats when I had kids. Then, I held Daisy for the first time… She seemed so tiny and fragile and the entire world seemed dangerous and full of stairs and cracks in the sidewalk and sharp corners and suddenly, in that very moment, I became a “flats person” because the thought of carrying my child in heels terrified me. (Don’t get me wrong: I will forever treasure my sky-high Louboutins, they just don't get out much anymore)

Fortunately, the world of flats is not as dreary as I’d once imagined. For everyday life, here are some of my favorites:

I live in my black Marc Jacobs’ Ballerina Flats. The best test of a shoe is how well it fares on a travel day and these babies shine in the airport. I can walk for miles and end the day blister-free. They are so comfortable they feel like slippers and they last forever.

J.Crew makes the prettiest, girliest flats in the most gorgeous colors and materials. The Gemma flat is my favorite because of its elegant pointed toe and narrow design. J.Crew flats are perfect for special occasions that still call for flats, or, dressing up an otherwise conservative suit at the office.

Remember Sam & Libby bow-toed shoes from when you were a kid? Well, they’re back. At Target. For like, $30 and they’re comfortable as ever and still pretty cute. Their nude flats work just as well with rolled-up boyfriend jeans as they do with black cigarette pants at the office. They’re also stretchy which came in handy when I was pregnant with Daisy and my feet started to swell before my very eyes!

If you love J.Crew but you’re on a budget, J.Crew Factory is now online and they always have a fantastic selection of affordable classics. Get on their mailing list too – their periodic sales often slash already-discounted prices in half. I keep my cart full and wait for the deals to come to me! These Edie Leather Loafers are a sophisticated take on the driving loafter – and as cute as they are comfortable.

As a child of the Sex and the City generation, I have worshipped Sarah Jessica Parker (and everything she wears) for fifteen plus years. I was obviously over the moon when she announced the launch of her own shoe line in 2014 and I’ve been slowly accumulating my own SJP collection ever since. These flats have that effortless chic that made Carrie - and SJP - such an icon.

A post about flat shoes may seem silly, but for me, becoming a flat shoe-wearer was a moment of surrender or a "coming of age". It was about letting go of one chapter in my life and embracing another. Motherhood has forced me to part with some amount of vanity and to put my child before the image I project to the world. My "fierceness" has nothing to do with the height of my heel now, but instead, my ability to juggle like a veteran magician. So, while my twenty-something self might've been surprised by the latest additions to my shoe collection, here I am, and the beauty of it all is that I am right where I'm meant to be.
